Konica 在 1987 年退出單反市場後，把重心轉向全自動輕便相機，希望用「隨身帶著走的高畫質小機」打開新市場。 1989 年推出的 Konica Big Mini A4就是第一代設計，後來直接衍生出整個 Big Mini 系列，被視為這條產品線的前身與奠基型號。

Big Mini 系列之所以在 90 年代大受歡迎，是因為把「電動沈胴（鏡頭平時可以縮回機身裡，使相機更薄、更方便攜帶）鏡頭＋全自動操作」做得又薄又可靠，真正做到放在口袋就能帶走，按一下就有穩定、清晰的相片。 A4 正是這個概念第一次完整落地的機種，外型方正簡約，搭配極薄機身，在當年非常前衛，也影響了同時期很多日本輕便機的設計路線。

1. 超纖薄電動沈胴設計
   A4 採用電動沈胴式 35mm f/3.5 鏡頭，關機時整個鏡頭縮回機身，機身變得非常扁平，可以輕鬆放入口袋，這在 80 年代末仍屬少見設計。 這種「打開電源鏡頭彈出、關機又收回」的使用體驗，後來幾乎成為 90 年代高階傻瓜機的標準，但 A4 是最早完成這種形態的機種之一。

2. 與後期 Big Mini 共享的優質 35mm f/3.5 鏡頭
   A4 使用的 35mm f/3.5 Konica 鏡頭為 4 片 4 組設計，這支鏡頭與之後 BM‑201、Big Mini F 同系，銳利度與散射表現非常出色，遠超一般消費級水準機水準，很多人形容它是「被低估的傻瓜機」。

3. 少見的獨立 Close‑up 近攝模式
   A4 則提供獨立 Close‑up 按鍵，啟動後對焦距離縮短到約 0.35 公尺，方便拍花草、餐桌、小物等特寫。

4. 曾獲「歐洲年度輕便相機」專業肯定
   有評論指出 A4 曾被評為「1990 European Compact Camera of the Year」，證明它在當年不只是市場上好賣的一台機，更是被專業圈認可的設計與性能代表。
